Girls Are Thin

So, I was watching a repeat of Friends on e4 and during the ad break came across the new A/W 2011 advertising campaign from H&M....

The Swedish retail company has used a cover of the 80's Duran Duran song ‘Girls On Film’... a rather inappropriate choice given the meaning of the lyrics and the controversy of the original, quite pornographic and demeaning video which caused uproar and was banned by the BBC.

Regardless, my point here is that the song lyrics may as well have been ‘Girls Are Thin’.

Size 0 models were banned from Victoria Beckham’s New York Fashion Week runway show in 2010, Madrid Fashion Week in 2006, Milan fashion show shortly after  and fashion labels Prada, Versace and Armani also agreed to ban size zero models from their catwalks.

So with all this taken into consideration, when I saw the latest advertising campaign for H&M with a shock song choice and a model with super skinny legs, I couldn’t help but think the fashion industry still has issues. Not mentioning the obsession with unusual height!

I would love to see the fashion world embrace normality...If only!

  1. normal is beautiful! too many girls (and guys) have low self-esteem because of contant bombardment of how we ought to look.
